Professor of Clinical Dermatology and Pathology; Director, UC Davis Dermatopathology Service
Dr. Fung has enjoyed the privilege of practicing academic dermatopathology for over 15 years, providing dermatopathology consultations to dermatologists and pathologists throughout Northern California since 2003, the year he founded the UC Davis Dermatopathology Service. Board-certified in Dermatology and Dermatopathology. Dr. Fung was born and raised in Sacramento, and graduated from John F. Kennedy Sr. High School. After completing undergraduate studies at Stanford University and medical school at University of California San Francisco, he completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. Dermatology residency training and chief residency were served at UC San Francisco, followed by dermatopathology fellowship training at Cornell University Medical Center under the direction of N. Scott McNutt, MD.
Board Certified Dermatopathologist since 1980 and Board Certified Anatomic & Clinical Pathologist since 1968, Dr. Smith has been providing consultation services for over 30 years. He offers the kind of in-depth knowledge and experience that has been trusted by dermatologists time and time again.
Dr. Smith was born in Modesto, raised in Oakdale, and attended the University of California at Berkley where he majored in physiology and premedical studies. He pursued his medical education at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City. Following an internship in surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital Medical Center he spent two years in the military as a general medical officer. Dr. Smith followed his military service with a four-year residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Santa Clara Hospital Medical center in San Jose.
After obtaining his medical boards in anatomical and clinical pathology, Dr. Smith developed an interest in skin pathology while working with a large pathology group in Modesto, and was encouraged by a local dermatologist to pursue a specialty in dermatopathology. In 1984, upon obtaining special boards, Dr. Smith opened his practice in dermatopathology to the satisfaction and highest regard of local physicians.
